CBT vs. DBT

If you’re trying to decide between CBT vs. DBT, it’s important to remember that talking to your counselor or therapist is the best way to determine what kind of therapy makes the most sense for your needs. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is a common form of therapy. When you go through CBT, your therapist will work with you to examine your thoughts and how those thoughts relate to your actions. You may talk about your past and how past experiences inform your current thoughts on situations, you have encountered in your day to day life. CBT works to break up automatic thought patterns that can lead to seemingly automatic behavioral patterns.

Dialectical behavioral therapy is a type of CBT. DBT expands on the basics of CBT by including considerations of how you interact with others. Different relationships and the environments of those relationships are all a part of DBT. DBT can be especially helpful for people who are processing trauma and have borderline personality disorder. DBT theory operates on the principle that some people experience a heightened sense of stress, fear, or other emotions than a typical person in various situations, due to their conditioning and their past.

CBT vs. DBT: Group Therapy

CBT is typically done one on one with a therapist. DBT also involves one on one therapy, but it usually includes a group component as well. The group helps your therapist understand how you interact with others. It also allows your therapist to gain insight into how you communicate and approach relationships, which can further inform your one on one therapy session goals. In DBT group therapy, participants work together to learn skills, including communication, interpersonal skills, emotional regulation, and more.
