Inpatient vs Outpatient Treatment

Millions of Americans struggle with addiction. Fortunately, there are facilities like Promises Five Palms willing to do what it takes to help those who are ready to heal. But when you or a loved one are ready to face down addiction, you may wonder the benefits of inpatient vs outpatient treatment. Both types of programs can provide the treatment necessary to overcome substance use disorder or addiction. However, depending on the unique needs of the individual, one program may be more suitable than the other.

Inpatient vs Outpatient Treatment

The major difference in weighing inpatient vs outpatient treatment is supervision. If you and your therapist or counselor agree that your substance use disorder or mental health issues mild enough, outpatient treatment may work best for you. On the other hand, if your condition requires 24-hour supervision or care, then an inpatient program is the way to go.

Outpatient programs put fewer restrictions on clients than inpatient programs. If you have work, school, or family obligations, outpatient treatment might be the best option. Typically outpatient treatment is conducted at night or in the early morning, allowing individuals to meet their other obligations. However, generally speaking, someone entering treatment requires close attention. Thus, outpatient programs are designed for individuals who have already completed detox and are only suffering from mild to moderate symptoms of addiction. During outpatient treatment, individuals come to the facility for an extended period built around their schedule. However, they receive the same quality of care as other treatment programs. Sometimes, as in intensive outpatient care, they receive a condensed form of treatment. Yet, at no time is the recovery work less difficult nor the expectations on the individual lessened.

The Benefits of Inpatient Treatment

Inpatient treatment is very similar to residential treatment in that individuals stay at the facility 24/7. The treatment program lasts anywhere from 30 to 90 days, depending on the needs of the individual. Living at the facility gives patients the opportunity to detox safely and securely with medical professionals monitoring them in case any complications arise. After the successful completion of detox, individuals move into the treatment portion of their stay. At this point, individuals participate in group therapy or family therapy, among other options. The benefits of inpatient treatment vary. However, a great benefit is the ability to isolate oneself in a caring, nurturing environment solely focused on a patient’s recovery.

For individuals new to rehab, when it comes to choosing between inpatient vs outpatient treatment, the greatest chance of success is in residential care. Because most individuals don’t have the support system in place outside of treatment to deal with relapse, inpatient treatment makes the most sense. However, as one progresses through treatment, this can change.
